What is Naturopathic Medicine? |

How Can Naturopathic Medicine Help You?
Naturopathic Medicine is a primary health care system that integrates modern science with traditional, natural medical practices. The principal objective is to treat the underlying root cause of disease and to promote health and vitality as a preventative, life-long goal. It is also a way to treat common health concerns in a gentle, natural manner.
As a licensed and experienced Naturopath, Dr. Carrie Watkins uses the following modalities and resources to treat patients:
Naturopathic doctors are guided by six principles which are the foundation of Naturopathic Medicine and outline the Naturopathic approach to health.
- First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere): To avoid harming the patient, Naturopathic medicine aims to use treatments that are safe, effective and with minimal side effects, to avoid suppressing symptoms whenever possible and respect each person's individual healing process with the least force necessary to effectively treat health challenges.
- The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae): Your naturopathic doctor works to restore and support the powerful and inherent healing ability of your body, mind and spirit and to prevent further disease from occurring. Naturopathic doctors identify and remove obstacles to recovery, facilitating and augmenting this ordered and intelligent healing ability.
- Identify and Treat the Cause (Tolle Causam): The primary goal of your naturopathic doctor is to determine and treat the underlying cause rather than simply managing or suppressing the symptoms. The underlying cause may be due to diet, lifestyle habits, life events, posture or environment. Treating the root cause requires taking into account each unique experience and working with the individual patient to make deep, lasting changes.
- Treat the Whole Person: This principle takes into account the connections in the whole body between physical, mental, emotional, genetic, lifestyle, social and spiritual influences. Disease often occurs from imbalances in several of these factors; therefore, true healing can only begin when we treat the whole person.
- Doctor as Teacher (Docere): Teaching how to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle is the foundation to long-term wellness. All treatments and protocols are thoroughly explained and discussed with all patients to ensure that they not only understand the treatment goals, but also learn how to apply healthy living principles to all areas of their lives.
- Disease Prevention and Health Promotion: Long-term health is more than the absence of disease or symptoms. Health entails functioning on the highest possible levels on a daily basis. Furthermore, health is the prevention of disease through proper nutrition, exercise, a balanced lifestyle, positive emotions, thoughts and actions.
